I work with scrap iron and juxtapose old memories and new forms so that a piece of my work is not only my creation but also carries the patina of past use and a different age. One piece of iron can be welded to another with a very small area of contact so exciting and apparently unlikely joins can be made. I am always grateful for access to scrap iron.
I first discovered welding in the sculpture studio
at A.P.U. While scavenging for old iron to work with I found sources of
old agricultural equipment and tools. In September 2000 I was asked to
make a sculpture using agricultural pieces of scrap for Denny Abbey. The
result was AGRICOLA 2000
In January 2001 I won a competition, organised through APU, to design a sculpture for the new Capitol Science Park at Fulbourn - see HELIX in Gallery 1. This was erected in the spring of 2002. It is 2.4 metres tall and made from stainless steel by Waterlink (UK) Ltd. in Ely. The sand blasted finish was done by West Norfolk Blasting and Finishing.
After a career in computing I did the Art Foundation course at the Cambridge Regional College. I went on to get a degree in Study of Art at Anglia Polytechnic University and subsequently studied there as an associate student. I am now working as an independent artist.
